DAY 7: DRINKS

In today's Zoom meeting, one suggested to me that the liquor companies would be fairing fairly well these days so a bit of research ensued. It is unclear about the laws regarding online sales in some parts of the world, where others have closed up shops completely. If we can't get milk delivered then why would alcohol be an essential item? Well, the market would say it is essential as demand sky-rocketed and this article from the NY Posts claims that there was a 243% increase in online sales.

Alcohol serves as a coping mechanism and with nowhere to go, solo, self-isolating house parties are happening now. Liquor companies are doing a bit more then keeping the sales and drinks flowing, however. Drinking it up and giving it back are a few things trending in the world these lockdown days. With the current shortage of hand-sanitizer, The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) in the US announced it is waiving provisions of internal revenue law with regard to distilled spirits, allowing automatic authorizations to distilled spirits companies who want to produce ethanol-based hand sanitizers to address demand. The measure is approved through June 30, 2020.

New York Distilling Company and Pernod Ricard are donating hand-sanitizer.
